Iryna: The Girl On The Train

Iryna Zarutska fled the war in Ukraine hoping to build a new life in America. On August 22, 2025, the 23-year-old boarded a light-rail train in Charlotte, North Carolina, on her way home from work.

Minutes later, she was fatally attacked without warning. Police arrested Decarlos Brown Jr., a complete stranger who had been sitting behind her.

The case of Iryna Zarutska would quickly raise troubling questions about public safety, mental health and whether this tragedy could have been prevented.
