Jesus kicks off Matthew 22 with the heartwarming tale of a royal wedding where people decline an invitation, murder the messengers, have their city burned down, and then watch some random guy get tied up and thrown into darkness for wearing the wrong outfit. Nothing says “loving kingdom of heaven” quite like a mandatory banquet with a violent dress code.
From there, the Pharisees and Herodians ask Jesus whether people should pay taxes to Caesar. Jesus delivers the famous “give to Caesar what is Caesar’s” response, which has been treated as theological brilliance for centuries despite sounding suspiciously like a guy saying, “Pay your taxes and also give God some stuff.” The Sadducees then ask what happens when one woman has been married to seven brothers, and Jesus reveals that marriage apparently disappears in heaven. Sorry to everyone expecting an eternal family reunion. According to this chapter, heavenly relationships may be less “reunited with loved ones” and more “you’re all vaguely angel-adjacent now.”
The hosts also dig into Jesus reducing hundreds of religious laws to loving God and loving your neighbor, while somehow leaving everyone just as confused about what actually gets a person into heaven. Many are invited, few are chosen, the goalposts keep moving, and apparently nobody gets an instruction manual. Add in a George Michael detour, comparisons between the wedding feast and poorly attended political rallies, sympathy for the Jewish groups Matthew keeps turning into villains, and an escalating argument over whether Yahweh might actually be the less irritating option.
The episode wraps with details about the upcoming Ark Encounter protest, the tenth anniversary of Ken Ham’s giant creationist boat attraction, and an invitation for listeners to come say hello, grab a handmade protest sign, and help bring some critical thinking to Kentucky.

“This tells me that God is issuing indiscriminate invitations to everybody, but then you show up and he’s like, ‘Nah, not you though.’”
