Jesus is back, and apparently the Son of God has decided that washing your hands is optional, Jewish traditions are overrated, and sticking your fingers in someone's ears counts as modern medicine. Welcome to Mark Chapter 7, where Husband and Wife tackle religious hypocrisy, questionable miracles, and a Messiah who seems increasingly determined to make them defend the very Old Testament God they've spent years criticizing. Seriously, Jesus, stop making us side with Yahweh. It's getting uncomfortable.

First up, the Pharisees have the audacity to question why Jesus' disciples aren't following ceremonial handwashing traditions (Mark 7:1–23). Jesus responds by calling them hypocrites, dismissing human traditions, and declaring that what goes into your body doesn't make you spiritually unclean. Congratulations, everybody! Shrimp and bacon are back on the menu! But Husband and Wife aren't buying his reasoning. If God supposedly established these dietary restrictions to distinguish his chosen people, why does Jesus suddenly get to throw them out? What follows is an unexpectedly passionate defense of Jewish cultural identity, a discussion of why religious rituals matter to communities, and the uncomfortable realization that Jesus sometimes sounds like an arrogant guy whose entire argument is because I said so.

Things get uglier in Mark 7:24–30, when a desperate Syrophoenician woman begs Jesus to heal her demon-possessed daughter. His initial response? Compare her to a dog and suggest that helping her would be taking food away from the children. How very compassionate. The woman cleverly turns his own metaphor against him, and suddenly Jesus decides she's worthy of assistance. Husband and Wife revisit the similar story in Matthew, question why the Gospel accounts differ, and wonder why the supposedly universal savior needs to be talked into helping a suffering child who isn't Jewish.

Finally, Mark 7:31–37 delivers what might be Jesus' grossest miracle yet. A deaf man who struggles to speak gets the full divine treatment: fingers shoved into his ears, spit applied to his tongue, a dramatic sigh, and the magical word Ephphatha! Somehow, this is a holy miracle rather than the kind of sorcery the Old Testament repeatedly condemns. Husband and Wife compare Jesus to a wizard, question the conveniently detailed eyewitness accounts, and demand something slightly more convincing than ancient hearsay. And thanks to a Discord listener, we discover the true power of "salivation." Because apparently salvation comes with a little extra moisture.

If you enjoy an atheist Bible study podcast that questions everything, laughs at theological absurdities, and refuses to give Jesus a free pass just because he's Jesus, this one's for you.
