On this special AIA Austin Homes Tour episode of TALKdesign, Adrian Ramsay catches up with architect Elizabeth Alford, co-founder of Pollen Architecture & Design. They explore an extraordinary Hill Country live-work home designed for interior designer and fiber artist Laura Roberts, bringing a working design practice, a textile weaving studio, and a private residence together under one roof.
Having known each other since their children were at school, Elizabeth and Laura approached the design as a collaborative creative partnership. The project began on a sloping site on the edge of Austin, greeted by a double rainbow right after an afternoon storm. Designed for a new chapter as an empty nester, the home sits quietly into the hillside to protect against Texas summer heat, then opens into a soaring 25-foot double-height studio that welcomes the eastern morning sun.
Elizabeth shares how clever spatial planning allows a compact footprint to feel expansive and grounding. From the floating mezzanine bedroom to custom timber kitchen counters, an off-grid 40,000-gallon rainwater system, and an integrated daily wellness sauna, this conversation shows how good architecture listens to the site, honours personal transitions, and creates spaces that feel right to live in.
