The Lindsay Clancy murder trial ended in a mistrial today after seven days and more than 38 hours of jury deliberations. The final day brought extraordinary courtroom drama after the jury again reported it could not reach a unanimous verdict and defense attorney Kevin Reddington argued that a single holdout juror was refusing to properly apply the law.
Before Judge William Sullivan formally declared a mistrial, Reddington won a one-hour delay and filed an emergency petition with the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court, asking for further inquiry into the holdout juror. The defense argued that potential bias concerning mental illness had compromised the deliberations. A single SJC justice denied the requested relief, and Sullivan subsequently declared the mistrial.
The case is not over. Lindsay Clancy still faces the murder charges, and the Commonwealth can seek a retrial. The court has scheduled a September 29 hearing to address what happens next.
