Dr Yvonne Couch narrates her blog written for Dementia Researcher.
Research culture is a phrase that turns up in every strategy document, but what does it actually mean?
In this narrated bonus blog, Yvonne takes her cue from an organisational psychology podcast. She asks why ideas of culture borrowed from the corporate world sit awkwardly in research, where there is no product and no single “top”. She sets out a framework of purpose, principles and practices, and looks at the trade-offs any culture has to accept. She then asks what happens when principles clash, such as when time spent mentoring isn’t counted as success. Her argument is that culture follows incentives, so the honest test of any research culture is what gets rewarded, promoted and funded.

Dr Yvonne Couch is an Associate Professor of Neuroimmunology at the University of Oxford. Yvonne studies the role of extracellular vesicles and their role in changing the function of the vasculature after stroke, aiming to discover why the prevalence of dementia after stroke is three times higher than the average. It is her passion for problem solving and love of science that drives her, in advancing our knowledge of disease. Yvonne shares her opinions, talks about science and explores different careers topics in her monthly blogs - she does a great job of narrating too.
