What does it take to go from hood to butterfly?
For my 248th interview on Quince Questions, I sat down with singer songwriter junee.songs right as her new album HOOD BUTTERFLY takes flight.
Junee' is in her transformation era. On the cover she stands in gold and brown against concrete and glass, wearing those blue, orange and yellow butterfly wings with a ghostly double exposure behind her — that tension between who you were and who you're becoming. That's the whole record.
We get into the making of HOOD BUTTERFLY, the album that includes "R U N Love With Me?", "Diamonds & Pearls", "Breathe", "Brown Skin Man" and more from the project released May 3 on Second Street Music.
In this conversation we talk about:
- The meaning behind Hood Butterfly and why she chose metamorphosis as the through-line
- How tracks like "R U N Love With Me?" and "Breathe" were built in the studio
- Gold eyeshadow, halos, and building a visual world to match the music
- Writing as inner dialogue and healing out loud
- What this album unlocked for her live show
If you've ever had to shed a skin to find your wings, this one is for you.
This episode drops Friday, Oct 9.
