If you’re in your 40s or 50s and suddenly feel like everything hurts, you’re not imagining it—and you’re not falling apart.
Maybe you wake up with stiff, achy feet. Your back feels sore for no obvious reason. Your knees suddenly feel creaky. One week it’s your shoulder, the next it’s your hip, your fingers, or your Achilles.
It can feel like your body changed overnight.
In this episode, I’m kicking off a four-part series on perimenopause, menopause, and pain by exploring what may actually be happening beneath the surface—and why these changes don’t necessarily mean your body is damaged, fragile, or destined for decline.
We’ll talk about the emerging understanding of the musculoskeletal syndrome of menopause, why hormonal changes can affect both your tissues and the way your nervous system processes sensory information, and why pain can become more diffuse, unpredictable, and intense during this transition.
We’ll also challenge one of the most damaging stories women hear in midlife: “You’re just getting older. This is what happens.”
Because believing your body is wearing out can change the way you move, exercise, and live—and may lead you to avoid the very activities that help maintain muscle, bone, mobility, and resilience as you age.
In this episode, you’ll learn:
- Why pain and stiffness can seemingly appear overnight during perimenopause
- Why pain may move from one part of your body to another
- How the hormonal environment can influence pain sensitivity, inflammation, connective tissue, and joint stiffness
- Why pain is not a reliable measure of tissue damage
- How fear of movement can unintentionally contribute to the pain cycle
- Why understanding what’s happening in your body can be an important first step toward feeling safer and more confident in it again
Most importantly, I want you to leave this episode knowing three things:
You’re not crazy. You’re not fragile. And this is not necessarily the beginning of an inevitable decline.

Over the next three episodes, we’ll go deeper into the biology behind these changes—including estrogen, progesterone, sleep and muscle guarding—before bringing everything together with practical strategies for somatic movement, pain-aware strength training, and building true physical resilience.
