King’s College London Defence Studies lecturer and Middle East scholar Simon Waldman returns to the World XP Podcast to examine where the conflict with Iran could go next — and why he believes another round of fighting may ultimately be more a question of when than if. We discuss the changing nature of warfare, drones and low-yield nuclear weapons, whether the United States needs to rethink its global military posture, and why modern conflicts are increasingly difficult to contain. We then trace the history behind today’s Middle East through the Suez Crisis, the Six-Day War, the Yom Kippur War, the rise of Palestinian nationalism, Egypt’s peace with Israel, and the Iranian Revolution.
