Will Patterson sat down with Eric Cloutier to talk about his debut LP My Friend The Abyss and dig deeper into the man behind Palinoia, published alongside an accompanying all-vinyl mix recorded live at Tresor Berlin. Cloutier reflects on 27 years of DJing and the "quality over quantity" philosophy that's kept Palinoia to just 12 releases in ten years. He discusses the slow, pressure-filled transition from digger to producer, admitting he's his own harshest critic and works entirely in-the-box by choice.
The album itself, he reveals, was born out of catharsis, a release valve for an especially brutal couple of years, which explains its unexpected swings into jungle, dub and ambient territory alongside his signature techno. Cloutier also speaks candidly about the current state of club culture, criticising promoters chasing metrics over substance and DJs feeding audiences predictable, algorithm-friendly sets, while affirming his own refusal to chase trends just to stay afloat.
