When the Prophet SAW passed, the religious community was on the brink of collapse. Even Umar ibn Khattab RA, one of the upcoming Rightly Guided Caliphs was in complete denial and in a frenzy. With the community and the future of the religion barely hanging on, Abu Bakr RA was tasked to unite them.
