He came from Spain in 1986 with his father's encouragement. He worked his way up to foreman. He left, came back and became a U.S. citizen in 2008. And somewhere in between, he spent decades restoring the U.S. Capitol, the Washington Monument and the National Cathedral — working on stone set by craftspeople a century before him, trying to be worthy of what they left behind.
