How We Seeez It! Episode 344: Big Trouble in Little China (1986)
“When some wild-eyed, eight-foot-tall maniac grabs your neck, taps the back of your favorite head up against the barroom wall, looks you crooked in the eye, and asks if you’ve paid your dues, you just stare that big sucker right back in the eye and remember what ol’ Jack Burton always says at a time like that: ‘Have ya paid your dues, Jack?’ ‘Yessir, the check is in the mail.’” — Jack Burton
John Carpenter’s urban fantasy action-adventure turns 40 this year. Starring Kurt Russell and set in San Francisco’s Chinatown, Big Trouble in Little China was released in 1986 without the fanfare it deserved. It wasn’t the hit it should have been, but it found a devoted audience during the home-video era and eventually became a cult classic.
Not only is it incredibly rewatchable, but repeated viewings may be required to fully understand its greatness. Join us as we discuss the movie, its wonderfully strange world, and why Jack Burton may not be quite the hero he thinks he is.
As always, mix a drink, have a listen, and let us know what you think. Tell us about something you’ve watched that we might enjoy or a can’t-miss series we should check out. Also, please rate and review the show on all your favorite podcast apps.
