Mexican authorities have arrested José Ángel Rivera Zazueta, known as “Don Flaco,” a man U.S. authorities accuse of helping finance and coordinate an international chemical-trafficking network. Investigators allege the organization moved precursor chemicals from China into Mexico, where chemicals could be used to manufacture synthetic drugs including fentanyl. The case reveals an often-overlooked side of the fentanyl trade: before the finished drug reaches the street, there is an international supply chain involving chemicals, money, transportation, and logistics.
