This week at Zion, Executive Pastor Anthony Rivera continued our series, Romans: The Gospel Changes Everything, with a message titled Am I Right With God? from Romans 5.
Paul answers one of the most important questions we can ask: How do I know I'm right with God? The good news is that our standing with God is not based on our performance, but on our faith in Jesus Christ. Through Him, we have been justified, given peace with God, access to the Father, and a firm place to stand in His grace.
We explored three powerful truths:
- We don't live for acceptance, we live from acceptance. Because of Jesus, we no longer have to strive for God's approval. We have full access to our Heavenly Father and can approach Him with confidence.
- Affliction doesn't get the final word. Romans 5 reminds us that suffering is part of life, but God uses it to produce endurance, character, and hope. Our circumstances may be real, but they don't have to define us because we are being filled and formed by Christ.
- The cross settles what our circumstances cannot. When we question whether God loves us, Paul points us back to the cross. Romans 5:8 reminds us that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. God's love was proven long before we had anything to offer Him.
Drawing from Hebrews 12:2, Anthony shared a powerful reminder: the joy set before Jesus as He endured the cross was us. He willingly endured suffering because He loved us and desired to bring us back into relationship with the Father.
The message concluded with a challenge to remember the blood of Christ. When life feels uncertain, when suffering feels overwhelming, and when we wonder where we stand with God, we can look to the cross and remember what Jesus has already done. Because of Him, we can trust God with our future and rest in the assurance that we have been made right with Him.
