Ole Miss is a 47.5-point favorite over Charlotte in Saturday's home opener, so this isn't a show about who wins. It's about what a win has to look like.

Steven Willis makes the case that there's a version of Saturday where Ole Miss wins by 35 and it's still a bad night — and lays out how to tell the difference. Pete Golding is going to call a deliberately simple defense, and that's not disrespect, it's a diagnostic: the only way to test communication is to strip everything down and see whether eleven people can line up correctly against an offense that can't hurt them. Blow an assignment in that setting and it stops being a scheme problem and becomes a personnel decision — and the diagnostic isn't just for the starters.

Also: Golding has coached four games as a head coach and all four came against ranked opponents. Saturday is the first unranked team he's faced from that chair, and handling a game you're supposed to win by seven touchdowns is a genuinely different job.

And the argument nobody else is making — why Louisville was an anomaly rather than a trend. Louisville sits on the Bobby Petrino coaching tree, and that tree has historically given Golding fits. The familiarity runs both directions, which is exactly why it evens out. Put that next to the Arkansas game in 2025 and the Texas A&M game in 2023 and you get one or two of these every season.

Then three keys — the busted coverages that have to get cleaned up now, the situational reps that actually carry over, and why installing anything exotic against Charlotte is a gift to Lane Kiffin. Plus a watch list on both sidelines.

And what Saturday actually is for Charlotte: roughly $1.7 million, the biggest spread in program history, and a game originally scheduled for a 15,000-seat stadium. Official prediction inside — including the honest note that it probably isn't a cover — and four things that get graded Monday.
