Introducing the Ancient Works Companion Series
Throughout Casting Through Ancient Greece, we have explored the ancient Greek world through the surviving accounts of historians, poets, philosophers and playwrights. Their works have helped us reconstruct events, understand the societies of the ancient world and gain an appreciation of how the Greeks understood the world around them.
But what happens when we move beyond the quotations and references, and begin exploring these ancient works for ourselves?
In this special episode, I'm introducing a new project: Ancient Works Companion, a series dedicated to working through some of the great surviving texts of antiquity, one section at a time.
The aim is to make these works more approachable while exploring the historical and cultural background, important themes, ideas and questions that emerge from their pages. Rather than simply retelling what these ancient authors wrote, each Companion episode will encourage listeners to engage directly with the original works, providing additional context and discussion along the way.
Whether you're encountering these texts for the first time or returning to something you've previously read, no specialist knowledge of ancient history, mythology or Classical literature is required.
Our first journey will take us into Homer's Odyssey.
Beginning with an introductory episode exploring how to approach Homer, we'll work through all twenty-four books of the Odyssey, before concluding with a final discussion of the poem as a complete work.
The series will initially be released through Patreon, with approximately two episodes each month, allowing supporters to read along as the journey unfolds. Once a Companion series has been completed, the intention is to bring it to the main Casting Through Ancient Greece podcast feed. While the next season will begin unfolding over on Patreon.
This introductory episode explains the thinking behind the project, how the Companion episodes will work, and how you can take part.
You don't need to be a classicist to read the Classics.
So, over the next year, we're going to read the Odyssey together. And with it, begin our journey through the great works of the ancient world.
