Webinar #307 Prof Paul Rylance - Teaching whole-person care

Dela

Recorded on 30 July 2026 for ICMDA Webinars.

Peter Saunders chairs a webinar with Prof Paul Rylance

Treating a patient should not be just about the condition, but also their psychosocial and spiritual needs – Body, Mind and Spirit. All over the world healthcare systems are increasingly pressured. Attitudes of many doctors and other healthcare workers are changing, with concerns about work-life balance and burnout.

In this context multi-professional team members might be less willing to “go the extra mile” in offering compassionate care, in the way Jesus demonstrated. There are many studies that show compassion benefits not just patients but also healthcare workers.

Professor Rylance will be sharing thoughts about the nature of Whole Person Care, evidence for the benefits, and how it can be taught.

Professor Rylance has been a Consultant in General and Renal Medicine in Wolverhampton, UK. Throughout his career he has led medical education, as Postgraduate Clinical Tutor and then Head of the Undergraduate Academy and is Honorary Professor in the University of Birmingham.

He is part of the Management Team of PRIME International (Partnerships in International Medical Education), a Christan Medical Education charity, whose teaching includes Whole Person Care.

His overseas experience started with a medical student elective in Liberia and more recently has taught with PRIME in the Seychelles, Uganda and Burundi, and now increasingly developing international online programmes.
