After the St. Louis Blues missed the playoffs in 2026, a lot of fans immediately labeled the season a failure. But when you really look at the bigger picture… was it actually THAT bad?
The Blues finished with an 86-point season after making the playoffs the year before and pushing the Presidents’ Trophy-winning Winnipeg Jets to seven games. While expectations were definitely higher heading into the year, this wasn’t a bottom-feeder team completely falling apart.
Robert Thomas once again proved he’s the face of the franchise, Jim Montgomery got his first full season behind the bench, and despite inconsistency all season long, St. Louis stayed in the playoff conversation longer than many expected.
Yes, the defensive structure collapsed at times, the goal differential became a major issue, and injuries plus roster changes hurt momentum. But this season also showed flashes of what this core can still become. The Blues were never truly rebuilding — they were stuck somewhere between competing and retooling.
So did the Blues have a disappointing season? Probably. But a disastrous one? That’s where the debate starts.
