The Declaration of Independence came hot off the press in Philadelphia on July 5th, 1776. From that point, people in the city had front row seats to history. They read, shared, translated, and listened to the words of the Declaration in the streets and squares, in the taverns and coffeehouses, and in their own homes, throughout the city. These newly minted Americans interpreted the words of the Declaration in their own way.
