Why America’s Right Is Turning Against Israel and the JewsSomething very important is happening on the American conservative right, and Israelis need to understand it.At Yoram Hazony’s National Conservatism conference in Jerusalem, I sat down with Amanda Milius and Jonathan Keeperman, two Jewish Americans who were invited to Israel to help explain the growing divide over Israel within parts of the American conservative movement. For decades, Israel could count on strong support from conservative Christians and the American right. Today, however, anti-Israel sentiment, and in some circles outright Jew-hating antisemitism, is gaining traction among voices that identify with the conservative right. Why is this happening? What are these Americans hearing about Israel? Why are some younger conservatives increasingly questioning the U.S.-Israel relationship? And, most importantly, what can Israel and the Jewish people do about it?I believe this was one of the most important discussions for Israelis to hear at NatCon.Because there is another side to this story that gives me tremendous hope. The Jews of Israel today actually embody so many of the values conservative Americans cherish: faith, family, patriotism, national sovereignty, military service, tradition, community, having children, defending the freedom-loving world, and refusing to apologize for loving our nation. And increasingly, Israelis don't want to continue receiving US aid. We want a relationship between two strong, sovereign allies based on shared interests, shared values, trade, technology and mutual benefit, not dependency. The problem is that millions of Americans have absolutely no idea.Too often, Israel is presented to Americans only through war, politics, foreign aid, the distorted lens of the mainstream media and the voices of progressive Jews in America. They don't see the incredible Jewish society being rebuilt in our ancestral homeland, or an Israeli public increasingly interested in greater independence and sovereignty. That means Israel has work to do.Instead of simply complaining that support for Israel is declining, we must understand why and start communicating directly with Americans about who Israelis actually are and what Israel represents.Watch this important conversation with Amanda Milius and Jonathan Keeperman from NatCon in Jerusalem, and share it with anyone concerned about the future of the U.S.-Israel relationship.
