A History of Violence could easily be passed off as a basic genre film that drifts into ultraviolence. However, when you examine this Cronenberg flick more deeply, you'll find a thoughtful film that asks us to consider violence from a philosophical perspective—specifically our history with it, our relationship to it, and whether we can ever truly escape our past entanglements with it.
