On this day in Portuguese history (7 May), the lower deck of the iconic 25 de Abril Bridge (formerly the Salazar Bridge) in Lisbon was officially inaugurated for rail traffic. Before this, the bridge only carried cars.
The addition of the Fertagus train line revolutionised commuting between Lisbon and the South Bank – drastically cutting traffic and travel time.
