What happens when the identity you built your life around begins to break down?

In this episode, Michael Anthony sits down with former firefighter and paramedic Darren Richardson, founder of Ashes to Ascent Coaching. Darren shares his journey through childhood trauma, amputation, life as a first responder, PTSD, alcoholism, identity loss, and ultimately healing.

After 18 years in emergency services, Darren left the fire service facing PTSD, identity loss, and the challenge of rebuilding life beyond the uniform. Through therapy, recovery, and another major amputation, he found new purpose as a resilience coach serving first responders, veterans, and amputees.

Michael and Darren explore healing, purpose-driven business, vulnerability in branding, overcoming fear, and finding a “why” stronger than fame or fast money.

In this episode, you’ll learn:

  • Darren’s path from childhood trauma and amputation to becoming a firefighter and paramedic
  • The emotional toll of first responder work and the challenge of returning home after traumatic shifts
  • How PTSD, alcohol use, nightmares, isolation, and identity loss affected Darren’s life after leaving emergency services
  • Why asking for help was one of the hardest and most important decisions Darren made
  • How a second amputation became a turning point in Darren’s healing and career transition
  • Why lived experience builds trust in coaching, leadership, and service-based businesses
  • How to use your personal story to create a more authentic personal brand
  • The difference between posting content and building a real business
  • Why entrepreneurs must overcome fear of being seen
  • How to reframe fear, take action, and keep going through failure
  • Why your “why” should be emotional enough to sustain you through hard seasons

Meet Darren Richardson: a mindset, resilience, and mental performance coach, motivational speaker, and founder of Ashes to Ascent Coaching.

Darren spent 18 years in the fire service as a firefighter and paramedic. His story began at 13, when an amputation changed his life forever. Years of answering traumatic calls later, he faced PTSD, depression, and the loss of an identity built around the career he loved. Still, he fought his way back toward the fire service, only to face a second amputation.

Every setback became a turning point, and every loss became a lesson. Today, Darren helps first responders, veterans, amputees, and others rise from their hardest moments, rebuild who they are, and turn pain into purpose.
