On September 12, 1952, a fiery object streaked across the West Virginia sky, leading a group of local youths, a mother, and a National Guardsman up Fisher Hill to investigate the suspected crash. Instead of wreckage, their flashlights cut through a noxious, sulfurous mist to reveal a towering, ten-foot entity with glowing orange eyes, a spade-shaped head, and a dark metallic robe that hissed violently and drove them down the hillside in terror. Though skeptics and Air Force investigators later blamed the hysteria on a meteor and a startled barn owl, the witnesses never recanted what they saw on that dark mountain. In this episode of Southern Ghost Stories, Allen Sircy examines the chilling encounters, Cold War paranoia, and seventy-year legacy behind the legendary Flatwoods Monster.
