The cannabis industry didn’t begin with dispensaries, slick branding, and billion-dollar companies. Long before legalization went mainstream, activists and marginalized communities were fighting for compassionate access—and the LGBTQIA+ community played a critical role in that history.

On this episode of Let’s Be Blunt with Montel, Montel sits down with his friend Rich Magaña, founder of Queer in Cannabis, for a candid conversation about cannabis, queer history, culture, representation, and where the industry goes from here.

Rich shares the story behind Queer in Cannabis and its mission to educate, elevate, and empower while preserving the stories of LGBTQIA+ advocates who helped shape cannabis reform.

Montel and Rich dig into the role the queer community played during the AIDS crisis and the early medical cannabis movement, why so much of that history has been overlooked, and what happens when an activist-driven movement becomes a multibillion-dollar industry.

They also tackle some tough questions: Is cannabis really as progressive and inclusive as it claims to be? What’s the difference between authentic allyship and “rainbow-washing”? Are social equity programs delivering meaningful opportunity? And what responsibility do today’s cannabis brands and retailers have to the communities that helped make legalization possible?

Rich also discusses the business side of inclusion—from brand loyalty and consumer experience to budtender education, inclusive dispensaries, the QIC Certified Shoppe initiative, and why authentic community engagement can be both socially responsible and good business.

It’s a conversation about remembering where cannabis came from while deciding what kind of industry we want to build next.
