A promise that sounds impossible can expose what we really believe. We open Genesis 17:15–27 with Abraham and Sarah, where God renames Sarai as Sarah “princess,” then declares that this elderly, barren couple will have a son. Abraham laughs, suggests a more practical plan through Ishmael, and God answers with a clear “No” and a stronger “Yes” while naming the child in advance: Isaac, “he laughs.”

Then we zoom into one of the most surprising faith and medicine connections in the Bible. As a physician, I unpack why God’s command to circumcise on the eighth day is not arbitrary: vitamin K, vital for normal blood clotting, is low at birth and rises by day eight. That same reality is why newborns receive a vitamin K injection today, and why missing it can lead to frightening spontaneous bleeding. Scripture and physiology meet in a way that points to a Creator who sees what we cannot.

We also wrestle with the covenant itself: Isaac is chosen as the heir of the everlasting covenant, yet Ishmael is still heard, blessed, and multiplied. The episode closes with one of the clearest takeaways in the passage: Abraham obeys immediately and leads his whole household to do the same day they receive the command. I end with a direct challenge to pray honestly, ask where we are holding back, and trust Jesus enough to obey.
