Kevin Aviance: Hippopotamus Deluxe, Happy B-Day, RIP Dolly Parton

Dela

Ballroom icon, house music legend, and the voice behind "Cunty", Kevin Aviance sits down with Yo Aunteas!

Kevin just dropped Hippopotamus (Deluxe) and opens up about everything: how Beyoncé sampled "Cunty" on Renaissance's "Pure/Honey" (and how he found out), what it's still like to be "cunty" at 58, laying the groundwork for a generation of Black queer artists, and why ballroom culture IS Black culture, period.

We go track-by-track through Hippopotamus — including "Dolls," his protest record for Black trans women, the gospel cut "What a Friend," and "Bloodlines," written from a conversation with the late Father Hector Xtravaganza. Plus: his new era as a DJ, the Fever NYC party scene, growing up in Richmond and coming up in DC nightlife, a tribute to Dolly Parton, and a first look at what's coming for Beyoncé's B'Day 20th anniversary.
