Daniel Ingram returns to the podcast to talk about a massive project he's co-founded to uncover the science behind advanced meditative states, mystical experiences, psychic phenomena and some of the stranger things that happen to human beings.
As always with Daniel, it's a far-ranging conversation. We get into what actually happens in the brain during advanced meditation, whether awakening itself might eventually have a measurable neurological signature, and whether AI, neuroscience and other technologies could one day help us access states that can currently take years of practice.
We also explore the potential risks and implications of developing technologies capable of doing that.
Daniel is a former emergency physician, meditation teacher and author of Mastering the Core Teachings of the Buddha. He's also unusual in openly describing himself as an arhat — someone who has reached an advanced stage of Buddhist awakening.
The project he's co-founded is the Emergent Phenomenology Research Consortium (EPRC), which brings together researchers, clinicians and practitioners to scientifically investigate these experiences and improve how they're understood and managed in medicine and mental health.
