Tomo Fujita has taught guitar at Berklee College of Music since 1993. In 1998 a young John Mayer walked into his summer clinic, signed up for private lessons and never missed a single Tuesday 9 a.m. class. In this conversation Tomo tells how he taught John clean technique, dynamics and triads, why he advised him to leave Berklee and keep writing songs, and what he heard of his own lessons when Room for Squares and Continuum came out. He also tells the story of his own lesson with Joe Pass (paid in cigars), explains his four rules for guitarists and talks about Guitar Wisdom, his online lesson platform.
