Luka Modrić: Forty-One and Still Running the Show

Dela

Most footballers his age are arguing about golf handicaps. Luka Modrić is still arguing with Serie A referees, and still winning the arguments that matter. Born on 9 September 1985, the Croatian captain is now 41 years old. The 2018 Ballon d'Or winner walked out of Real Madrid after thirteen glittering seasons and six Champions League titles to join AC Milan on a free transfer. For Modrić, joining a club with such a rich history was a dream realized; for the rest of Serie A, it was the start of an ongoing nightmare.

He wasted no time rewriting the record books in Italy. Upon his debut, he became Milan's oldest ever debutant at 39 years and 348 days. Three weeks later, just days after turning forty, he swept home a first-time finish from Alexis Saelemaekers' square ball to defeat Bologna 1–0 at San Siro. That made him the oldest midfielder ever to score in Serie A, breaking a mark held by Nils Liedholm since 1961.
