Matt Smith is an American entrepreneur, investor, economic commentator, podcaster, and author. A college dropout, he has founded and led companies in media, technology, agriculture, and education, and strongly advocates practical, real-world skill-building over traditional college. In 2021 he moved to Uruguay, where he runs a regenerative cattle ranch. He publishes the Crisis Investing newsletter, co-hosts the Doug Casey’s Take podcast, and co-authored the 2025 book The Preparation: How to Become Competent, Confident, and Dangerous with Doug Casey and his son Maxim. The book presents a four-year, hands-on alternative to college built around intensive skill “cycles” in areas like emergency medicine, piloting, ranching, entrepreneurship, and philosophy.
