Avoid the Explosive Diarrhea!!

A large-scale outbreak of cyclosporiasis, a parasitic illness nicknamed “explosive diarrhea,” has sickened over 6,700 people across 34 U.S. states since May 2026, with 1,644 confirmed cases and more than 5,100 probable cases under investigation. At least 141 people have been hospitalized, but no deaths have been reported.

Cause and Spread

The illness is caused by the microscopic parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis, which spreads through contaminated food or water. It infects the small intestine and can cause watery, frequent, and loud bowel movements, along with stomach cramps, nausea, loss of appetite, fatigue, and weight loss. Symptoms can last for weeks if untreated.

Recent Outbreaks

One of the largest clusters is linked to shredded iceberg lettuce served at Taco Bell locations in Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and West Virginia. The lettuce was traced to Taylor Farms de Mexico, a supplier in Central Mexico. Taylor Farms has recalled shredded iceberg lettuce sold in 27 states from June 29–July 16, 2026, and has stopped receiving product from the implicated lot.

What This Means for Consumers

• Do not eat shredded iceberg lettuce from the recalled lots; dispose of it immediately.

• Wash all fresh produce thoroughly before eating.

• Practice good hand hygiene, especially after handling raw produce.

• If you develop persistent diarrhea, stomach cramps, or nausea, seek medical attention promptly.
