President Donald Trump’s plan to provide $8 billion to farmers to offset rising diesel costs is drawing skepticism from strategists and those in the agriculture community, who say the money offers only temporary relief as Republicans face pressure ahead of the midterm elections.

Trump announced the funding Monday during a campaign stop in Kansas, where Sen. Roger Marshall (R) is facing a surprisingly competitive reelection bid, Bloomberg’s Ilena Peng, Ben Westcott, and Michael Hirtzer reported. The aid is intended to help farmers cover higher fuel costs and comes amid warning signs that farmers, a typically Republican constituency, might not turn out to vote on Nov. 3.

But observers are doubtful Trump’s latest gambit will be a significant help to either farmers or Republicans, spelling potential trouble for the party in parts of the country where agriculture is the center of the economy.
