Mike Day:- This House Pt. 31: Flourishing in Exile, Pt. 11: Credible Witness: How Could a Loving God Allow So Much Suffering?
"This House: Becoming a Dwelling Place for God," explores the topic of suffering from a Christian apologetics perspective, addressing the question, "How Could a Loving God Allow So Much Suffering?"
The Reality of Suffering: Suffering is experienced both personally (in our own lives) and universally (in the lives of others), making it real, personal, and universal.
The Challenge of Suffering in the 21st Century: Contemporary challenges include cyber suffering, mental health struggles (such as the impact of digital technology on the younger generation), and systemic suffering.
Worldviews on Suffering:
Atheism: Views suffering as blind, pitiless indifference and part of "the way it is" without rhyme, reason, or ultimate meaning.
Hinduism: Regards suffering as an illusion.
Buddhism: Proposes escaping suffering by extinguishing desire through the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Noble Path.
Islam: Approaches suffering through the concept of inshallah.
A Christian Response: Unlike other worldviews, Christianity teaches that suffering is a real, unfair, and terrible reality that is not noble or to be welcomed, but it is not meaningless. The Christian perspective encompasses:
Suffering and evil are real and wrong: The faith validates human rage against injustice.
Suffering is not meaningless: It is categorized into three dimensions of hardship: Peirasmos (trial and testing), Paschō (suffering and enduring/vulnerability and undeserved abuse), and Palē (wrestling and struggling/spiritual warfare).
God is a suffering God: God chose to experience humanity's limitations and sorrows directly.
Suffering is limited: Scripture promises that God provides strength to endure, will restore believers after a short time of suffering, and will ultimately eliminate death, crying, and pain
