Late in the afternoon on March 20, 1990, Jim Hannigan, a caretaker for the Carney property, was checking property lines and fences near Clayton Expressway in Fort Smith, Arkansas when he saw something in the distance.

At first, he thought it might be a dead animal. But when he got closer, he realized it was not an animal. It was a body.
