What happens when you combine blood flow restriction training with online ballet and modern dance?
In this episode of BFR Radio, we explore a novel 12-week randomised controlled trial examining whether BFR could enhance the strength and balance benefits of online dance classes in women aged 65 years and older.
Both groups completed two 75-minute online ballet-modern dance classes each week. The difference? One group performed the classes while wearing elasticised BFR cuffs around the proximal thighs.
The results provide an interesting look at where BFR may — and may not — add value.
The BFR group significantly improved performance on the 30-Second Sit-to-Stand, while the dance-only group did not. Both groups improved calf-raise performance and dynamic balance, although the pattern of improvements differed across the balance-test directions.
In this episode, I unpack:
Why strength and power are so important for fall prevention with ageing
The potential role of dance as an accessible balance intervention
Why online exercise can create an intensity problem
How BFR was applied during the 75-minute dance sessions
Changes in sit-to-stand and calf-raise performance
What happened during the modified Star Excursion Balance Test
Where BFR appeared to add value — and where dance alone may have been sufficient
The potential application of BFR within remote and community-based exercise
Important limitations when interpreting these findings
The broader question is an important one: can BFR help make accessible, low-intensity exercise sufficiently challenging to produce meaningful physical adaptations in populations who may not be able to train conventionally?
