The Silver Rail shooting in Bend, Oregon, left three children and a teacher dead after a sixteen-year-old opened fire inside an elementary school. A nearby community member intervened, stopping the attack before more of the nearly five hundred people on campus were harmed. In the aftermath, grief can make it difficult to reconcile tragedy with belief in a good and powerful God. Yet even our outrage at such evil points to something deeper: we know this world is not as it should be—and that longing can lead us toward the hope only God can provide.
