Cambodian-American Kravann has spent much of his life resenting his father, Boonsong, for the emotional distance between them. Then he inexplicably awakens in his father's body in 1985 California. Forced to experience the exhausting farm labor, poverty, racism, family pressures, and quiet sacrifices that shaped Boonsong's life after surviving the Khmer Rouge, Kravann begins to see the man behind the role of “father.” Blending family drama with a touch of speculative fiction, What My Khmer Father Couldn't Say explores the Cambodian refugee experience, intergenerational silence, assimilation, and the different ways parents and children understand love. At its heart is a question many children of immigrants eventually confront: What changes when we begin seeing our parents as whole people with lives, fears, and dreams of their own?
