#325 If you've tried more fibre, more water, magnesium, even prescription laxatives, and nothing has given you lasting relief, this episode looks at new research that might help explain why.
A 2026 study in Gut Microbes found that two common gut bacteria, Akkermansia muciniphila and Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron, working together, can break down the protective mucus layer in the colon of mice and cause constipation. I walk through what the research showed, why the mouse evidence is strong but the human evidence is still early, how a low-fibre diet fits in, and why I'm cautious about blanket advice on Akkermansia. I also cover what shotgun metagenomic stool testing can and can't tell us, and where to start if nothing has given you lasting relief.
If this sounds like your situation, book a consultation with me and let's work out what's actually driving it.
