The late 90s set the foundation for modern gaming soundtracks. A few video game soundtrack superstars like Nobuo Uematsu had already made a name for themselves before the 1990s, but fans of video game music still represented a small sub-culture. Music was slowly transitioning from 8 bit to 16 or 24 bit but the days of chiptune were slowly fading away.
