Cults are not inexplicable aberrations populated by uniquely gullible people. They magnify ordinary human tendencies of idealization, belonging, cognitive dissonance, sunk costs, power imbalance, spiritual inflation, and our desire to mistake temporary mystical states of consciousness for permanent attainment.
