If you're a blogger, content creator, or entrepreneur, you've likely heard the term "influencer." But for many creators, stepping into that role can feel uncomfortable. You’re not just posting beautiful photos or writing helpful blog posts—you’re stepping forward as a recognizable brand with a human face.
In my latest Blogger Genius Podcast episode, I sat down with Gordon Glenister, an expert in influencer marketing and host of the Grow Your Influence Online podcast, to break down what it takes to make this shift without feeling inauthentic.

Why Your Influence is More Valuable Than Your Content
With the rise of AI-generated content, Gordon and I discussed how pure content creation is becoming commoditized. What remains valuable? You—the creator behind the content. Your unique personality, expertise, and personal brand are what make people engage and keep coming back.
Many bloggers see Instagram influencers as self-promoters, but Gordon argues that successful influencers are problem solvers. If you help moms, food lovers, or DIY enthusiasts, you’re already building influence—you just need to recognize and harness it.
How to Build Influence Without Selling Out
A common fear is that stepping into the influencer role means selling out. However, Gordon explained that brands want to partner with authentic creators who care about their communities. The key is staying true to your audience and only partnering with brands or promoting products that align with your values.
He pointed out that many creators have highly engaged communities but aren’t monetizing them simply because they don’t see their value. If you’ve built a following, even a small one, you already have influence—you just need to recognize and leverage it.
Strategies to Step into the Influencer Role
If calling yourself an influencer feels uncomfortable, here are some simple shifts you can make:
1. Become Memorable
Gordon shared that successful influencers often have a signature style or catchphrase. This can be as simple as wearing distinctive glasses (like Gordon does) or always signing off your content in a consistent way. Think about what small, repeatable element could make you stand out.
2. Create a “Weekly Moment”
One of Gordon’s biggest tips was to establish a regular posting rhythm. Whether it’s a weekly newsletter, a podcast episode, or an Instagram series, showing up consistently builds trust and anticipation.
I’ve been experimenting with this myself, sharing my Build Your Digital Product Empire series on Instagram. Even though I don’t post it on a set day, I’ve noticed my engagement steadily increasing just from naming it as part of a series.
3. Make Your Audience Feel Seen
People don’t just want to consume content—they want to feel acknowledged. By engaging with your audience’s comments, asking for their feedback, and even mentioning their insights in your content, you create a deeper connection.
4. Niche Down to Stand Out
Rather than trying to be an expert in a broad category like “food blogging,” think about your niche. For example, instead of just being a dessert blogger, you could focus on gluten-free, five-ingredient desserts for busy moms. The narrower your niche, the more recognizable and sought-after you become.
5. Tell Your Audience What to Do Next
One of the biggest mistakes content creators make is not giving clear calls to action. Gordon recommends always guiding your audience on what to do next—whether it’s saving a post, subscribing to a newsletter, or joining your membership. If you don’t spell it out, people won’t take action.
The Role of AI and the Future of Influence
We also discussed AI’s growing role in content creation. While AI can speed up your workflow, your human personality remains irreplaceable. Gordon emphasized that people buy from people. If you’re using AI, make sure it’s enhancing—not replacing—your unique voice and brand.
Start Growing Your Influence Today
Building influence doesn’t mean becoming a different person. It simply means amplifying what makes you unique and showing up consistently. If you’re already helping people through your content, you’re halfway there.
So, what’s your signature element? Your “weekly moment”? Your niche? Start putting these strategies into practice today and watch your influence—and opportunities—grow.
