I spent years learning to be visible. I built something, I put my name on it, I got over the fear of being seen. And then, right when the visibility became real, it got scarier than it ever was when it was just an objective.
A few years ago I went to a conference full of people in my space, and I watched person after person stand on a stage and claim they were speaking for the universe. Downloading the secrets. Unlocking your superpowers. Selling the overnight transformation. And it spooked the living daylights out of me, because I could see how it happens: well-meaning people letting visibility warp their sense of who they are and what they are actually doing.
So I asked myself three questions. Is that who I am? Is that who I want to become? And the hard one: how do I make sure I never cross that line? I did not have clean answers, so I did something that probably looked like disappearing. I stepped back. I got quiet on purpose.
I spent a few years rebuilding the thing I made and rebuilding myself alongside it, until I understood the difference between having a talent for something and believing you have transcended being human.
