James Talarico was asked one question at a Texas campaign stop: Who’s your favorite drag queen in the state? He didn’t hesitate. “Oh my gosh. Probably Alyssa Edwards.” Watch the clip. Then ask yourself if that’s the reflex you want in a U.S. senator. Most Americans could not name a drag queen if you handed them a week. The Democratic Senate nominee in Texas had a name in under a second — and he smiled when he said it. The performer he picked, Alyssa Edwards, has described himself as a drag performer who works with children. That sits on top of Talarico’s own 2023 line that Texas produces some of the best drag queens in the nation. Ken Paxton, his Republican opponent, asked the question a lot of regular people asked after the clip hit: What normal person can name his favorite drag queen this quickly? Paxton called him too weird and too radical for Texas.
