On today's PoM podcast I sat down with Jarrett Bailey author of Iron Sharpens Iron: A Machinist's Handbook for the Soul

Jarrett wrote this book in honor of his father Ernest Bailey who ran a small machine shop in a rural community for nearly 40 years. His son Jarrett grew up in it — and in Iron Sharpens Iron, he takes readers back into that shop, one devotion at a time.

This isn't a devotional wearing a machinist costume. Each entry begins with something real from the trade — tramming a mill head, reading a micrometer to the ten-thousandth, cutting a thread by hand — and follows it to a specific spiritual truth. A dial indicator's runout becomes a picture of submission. A casting's hidden voids become a picture of what we bury. The metaphors hold because the machining is real.
