Taqwā, a lecture by Shaykh Abu Idrees Muhammad Khan (hafidhahullāh)

• "We have instructed those who were given the Book before you, and you, to have taqwā of Allāh", and "Fear Allāh as He should be feared, and do not die except as Muslims"

• What is forbidden is left entirely, while what is commanded is done to the best of one's ability: the example of Ḥajj for the one who is able

• "Fear Allāh and know that you will meet Him", and the Fire whose fuel is men and stones

• "Fear Allāh wherever you are": in public and alone, as a child behaves when the parent is watching

• The definition of taqwā: placing a shield between yourself and Allāh's anger and punishment, and Ibn ʿAbbās on the people of taqwā

• ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb falling ill for a month after hearing "The punishment of your Lord will surely come"

• Taqwā is leaving what Allāh forbade and doing what He made obligatory; the verse of al-birr describes the people of taqwā

• Taqwā in speech, in differences between brothers ("Fear Allāh and set right matters between you"), with one's wives, and in dealings with money

• The fruits of taqwā: beneficial knowledge, a way out of every difficulty, provision from where one does not expect, blessings from the heavens and the earth

• Crossing the Ṣirāṭ according to one's taqwā, Allāh saving those who feared Him, and Allāh being with the people of taqwā

• This life is play and amusement, and the promise of Allāh is true
