• The Khawārij: why they are so named, leaving the straight path and revolting against the rulers • Their origin: Dhul-Khuwayṣirah's objection to the Prophet ﷺ, and the view of Ibn al-Jawzī in Talbīs Iblīs • "A word of truth by which falsehood is intended": ʿAlī's reply to them, and their misuse of the texts to shed blood • The Prophet's ﷺ foretelling of the Khawārij as a sign of prophethood, and the Companions' consensus on fighting them • Their declaring the sinners from the Muslims to be disbelievers
