Terry Taylor: Leading blood cancer specialist on leaving New Zealand for Australia, unsafe staffing levels

Dela

A leading blood cancer specialist with more than 30 years’ experience says he's leaving New Zealand for Australia, due to unsafe staffing levels.

Terry Taylor has resigned from his specialist cancer diagnostic role at Dunedin Hospital's pathology lab – frustrated by the lack of a national plan to recruit and retain scientists.

Taylor told Mike Hosking he knows his departure won’t help the situation, but he's been trying to improve it for many years.

He says after the pandemic, the country had an opportunity to reset everything – however he's been banging heads with Ministers and Health New Zealand instead.

Taylor says about six blood cancer specialists have left their roles in the past six months, from a total of about 10.
