In the 1991 murder of 25-year-old Cynthia Renee Gonzalez, the investigation eventually turned toward a notorious Texas serial killer, Kenneth Allen McDuff. Having once been sentenced to death for the murders of three teenagers, McDuff was eventually released from prison amid a growing crisis within the Texas criminal justice system.
Throughout the 1980s, prison overcrowding, controversial parole practices, and allegations of corruption created conditions that allowed violent offenders to return to society. McDuff's release would become one of the most infamous examples of the system's failures, particularly as young women began disappearing across Central Texas in the early 1990s.
For Arlington homicide detective Jim Ford, certain circumstances surrounding Cynthia's disappearance and murder warranted a closer examination of McDuff's crimes. Similarities involving the locations, timing, and circumstances raised questions about whether Cynthia might have encountered the infamous killer.
As investigators worked to establish possible connections, they faced the difficult task of separating coincidence from evidence, while the consequences of Texas's troubled parole system continued to unfold.
